Ivan Boljat on the Art of Defiance in Blazey's New Video
Last week marked the release of "Nothing To Lose," the latest track from Berlin-based artist Blazey.
The music video, directed by our own Ivan Boljat, showcases a dynamic fusion of visual flair and musical rhythm. We spoke with Ivan to discuss his collaboration, the project and delve into the creative process that brought the video to life.
Let’s go back to the moment you first heard the track. What happened?
“When Blazey sent me the song, I was in my kitchen, working on my laptop, and I just couldn’t stop moving to the music. A song that captures me right from the start excites me to develop visuals that match its energy. Immediately, images of dancing and reckless abandon started flooding my mind. It was an electric feeling.”
What does this song and video represent to you?
“It’s a reminder that life’s short and people will try to box you in, create this image of you that fits their view, not who you really are. I wanted this video to show Blazey navigating fame, pressure, striving for perfection but feeling false, like a doll set up for show. Early in your career, people try to mold you. This video is about pushing back, setting your own limits.”
What was it like pitching your vision to Blazey?
“He sent over a mood for the video, which instantly sparked all these additional images and ideas in my mind. I scribbled everything down and then showed it to Blazey. The moment he approved my vision, I felt a rush of excitement. It was like, ‘Yes, we’re really doing this!’ He really trusted me creatively, which gave me a lot of freedom. We clicked aesthetically, which made everything flow so smoothly. The collaboration was incredible.”
How did the project come to life after that?
“Trusting my team was crucial. We faced some tight budgets, which actually forced us to think more creatively about the production. Everyone brought their A-game because they believed in the project as much as I did. Choosing the right people, who are passionate and skilled, helps a lot. You need that belief in the vision, and yeah, you’ve got to have fun with it too.”
What are you most proud of?
“I’m proud that it truly shows what I’m about, my aesthetic. Realizing my vision with an artist I respect made me proud. We managed to blend movement, fashion, and a narrative in a way that was really fun. That’s what I’m most proud of.”
